about

Australian acoustic guitarist Alan Gogoll, thought his days of songwriting had to come to an end, so it came as a surprise when his latest album ‘Turtlebank Tales’ poured out and took on a world of its own. Through the free spirit of the imagination, ‘Turtlebank Tales’ came to life through instrumental guitar compositions. The 11-track album is available to listen to on all platforms.

“I actually had no intention of writing any more songs for some time and rather focusing on relearning and refining existing songs of mine. So, it was a great surprise when Turtlebank
Tales started to take shape! Once I had the title and theme for the album, the songs all fell into place.” explains Gogoll. Deciding to explore the concept of the album further, he commissioned Russian artist Tatiana Lishaeva, to illustrate the album artwork which would set the tone and theme of the whole story.

Recorded across one week in Alan Gogoll’s makeshift studio in Tasmania, Australia, ‘Turtlebank Tales’ is that of innocent escapism, as it captures the whimsical scene of wildlife creatures who gather on the side of the riverbank, each with a story to tell. “The album is written to be listened to in one go and each piece is placed to flow into the next, creating a sound scape and story of the going on at ‘Turtlebank Tales.” says Gogoll.
These woodland tales are told through the enchanting charm of Gogoll’s Åstrand Å-OM guitar, child-like wonder expressed through signature harmonics and melodic phrasings accompanied by the innovative titles that match the mood of each piece. At moments playful, at other times gentle and melancholic, the album is a cohesive work of art, each song a piece of this riverbank universe Gogoll has created.
Opening track ‘Toad In The Morning’ makes for the perfect beginning. Its melodic warmth and serenity, sound like the early morning as the sun begins to rise. Following is the shortest track on the album ‘Polkadot Paws,’ an upbeat and lighthearted song offering rhythm and dance to get those paws tapping. The first song written for the album ‘Owl

and the Moon’ is more contemplative, a solitary owl sitting alone with the moon. It’s a soothing piece, like that of a warm hug goodbye, with its bittersweet melody and harmonic flourishes.
‘Four Little Foxes’ is slower, almost lullaby-esque, while ‘Grasshopper Gumboots’ lives up to its name with a vibrant bounce that evokes happiness and joy. ‘Alligator Twilight’ is possibly the most unusual piece on the record, the slight tension in the notes reflected in the title, an alligator being a peculiar visitor to the riverbank gathering. ‘Cindermouse Circus’ catches the essence of the album art illustration with bell harmonics, a unique technique invented by Alan Gogoll himself, a signature sound that weaves in and out of the album, but is most prominent in ‘Cindermouse Circus’ adding a sprinkle of magic.
Offering peace and solace, ‘Turtlebank Tales’ not only captures the imagination but also highlights the true meaning of folk music. ‘Turtlebank Tales’ is likely to follow tradition, songs and stories passed down through the years, bringing moments of joy for those young and old.
